Vehicle importation to Kenya from Japan
The vehicle importation to Kenya is covered under the Kenya Bureau of Standard (Standard code: KS03 1515:2000) and there is major regulation as follows.

1. Age limitation The vehicle which has been past the 8 years old from year of manufacture, it is not allowed to import. Therefore, you can select the vehicle from year 2004 or upwards in year 2011.
2. Left Hand Drive (Left hand side steering wheel vehicle) All left hand drive vehicles are not allowed to import unless they have special permission from Government or ambulance etc special utility.
3. Road Worthiness(JEVIC) All used motor vehicles from Japan to Kenya has to be past the inspection of road worthiness before shipment. Japanese vehicle Importers from Japan will be required to submit this road worthy certificate which will be issued by Japan Export Vehicle Inspection Center Company Limited(JEVIC) for clearance purpose at Mombasa port. ***And also, Import Declaration Form(IDF) will be issued by KRA-customs services within 48hours once you made application at KRA. At that time, you need to prepare to submit the proforma invoice(invoice will be issued by Autorec Enterprise, Ltd.) with your PIN. Import Declaration Form (IDF) processing fees is 2.75% with a minimum of Kshs5,000 that is paid in advance on application.

Taxation of vehicle importation to Kenya from Japan
The taxation figures will currently be as follows.

• Import duty is 25% of CIF value.
• Excise Duty 20% of (CIF+Imoprt duty value)
• VAT is 16% of (CIF +import duty value + Excise Duty value).

**Calculate cumulatively**
Import Duty+Excise Duty+V.A.T will work out to 74% on all vehicles irrespective of engine size.
